Selecting the Right Ceiling Fan for You

Choosing the right ceiling fan used to be just a matter of coordinating with your existing decor. In the last 10 years ceiling fans have become more technologically advanced, and now picking the right fan can help you save a significant amount on your monthly energy bill, cooling your home in the summer and helping warm it in the winter.

Ceiling fans are also available in ENERGY STAR qualified models, giving you the greatest energy savings. As one of the most recognized names in lighting, Monte Carlo is proud to feature hundreds of ceiling fan styles making them the selection of Home Builders, Architects, and Interior Designers today.

Step 1: What Size Ceiling Fan Do You Need?

Envision the room, the space, the use.

Monte Carlo ceiling fans not only offer a broad range of styles, but come in a wide range of sizes. Here are some guidelines to help you choose the right fan:

Application: Room Size: Suggested Category:
Bathroom, Hallway, Laundry Room Up to 50 square feet Small Spaces
Small Bedroom, Small Kitchen Up to 100 square feet Small Room
Standard Bedroom, Family Room Up to 400 square feet Large Room
Great Room, Large Areas Over 400 square feet Great Room
Patios, Gazebos Open Outdoor

Step 2: What Style & Color Ceiling Fan Do You Prefer?

For a coordinated look, match the blade finish to furniture or wood molding. Or select a fan body finish that matches door or cabinet hardware. Monte Carlo offers blade sets that can be purchased separately if you would like to personalize or update your Monte Carlo ceiling fan.

Step 3: How High is Your Ceiling?

Ceiling fans should be installed, or mounted, in the middle of the room and at least 7 feet above the floor and 18 inches from the walls. If ceiling height allows, install the fan 8 - 9 feet above the floor for optimal airflow.

Standard Mounts

Standard mount ceiling fans come with a 3 - 5 inch downrod, which is the metal pipe that extends from the ceiling bracket to the top of the fan.

Low Ceilings

Flush mount ceiling fans anchor directly against the ceiling. Most standard fans can be installed as flush mount but, Monte Carlo offers "hugger" or "low profile" ceiling fans that are specifically designed for this purpose. Hugger fans are ideal for rooms that have ceilings under 8 feet in height or in situations where a fan with optional light would hang too low. Hugger fans will not move as much air as a regular fan because the blades are closer to the ceiling.

Sloped Ceilings

Sloped mounts are used for angled or vaulted ceilings. Sloped canopy mounts may be purchased separately.

High Ceilings

For ceilings over 9 feet, additional lengths can be added with coordinating downrods in 12 - 72 inch lengths to meet your needs.

Ceiling Height: Suggested Downrod Length:
9-ft 12-in
10-ft 18-in
11-ft 24-in
12-ft 36-in
13-ft 48-in
14-ft 60-in
15-ft 72-in

*Longer downrods must be purchased separately.

Step 4: Do You Need a Light for Your Fan?

Whether casual, contemporary, eclectic, modern, transitional, or simply traditional, ceiling fan light kits and accessories are the perfect way to achieve your desired fashion or functional needs. Monte Carlo designers take pride by using unique glass designs, colors and finishes, and blade materials that make these products some of the most attractive and desired styles available today.

Ceiling fan light kits are available in many sizes and designs for indoor and outdoor areas.

Step 5: Select a fan control

To operate your fan and light separately from a single switch without additional rewiring, choose a Monte Carlo wall control. For convenient, easy operation in bedrooms and rooms with high ceilings, consider a wall control that also contains a remote control.
